About the event
This event is now fully booked.
Take a walk around the south-western part of the city centre and see how some of our old houses have changed in architectural style, ownership and use over time.
Up until the 18th century, it was common practice for premises to be used both as working and living quarters. Some streets became more genteel, with well-to-do folk getting rid of the ground floor shop, closing their section of the Rows, and creating a larger town house. In some cases an older property was demolished and a brand new town house built on the site instead. Some of these town houses are still with us, now used as shops, bars, cafes or offices. But, it wasn’t just the well-heeled who lived in the city centre. Many people settled here, including doctors, teachers, clergy, mayors, aldermen, tradesmen and working class people.
This walk is free but due to limited numbers booking is essential.
Duration approx. two hours. The walk will end On Watergate Street, Chester. The route is approximately two miles.
Please note: the route is not fully accessible as it includes steps.
